What to see

MADISON Mitchell’s shocking visions become even more terrifying when she realizes that her waking dreams are true. Directed by James Wan, Malignant stars Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson, and George Young. Hollywood Re-porter’s Frank Scheck writes, “For a while Malignant works fairly well as a creepy, if slow-moving, thriller, tinged with supernatural elements rendered with visually striking CGI effects. But as more of the jaw-dropping, outlandish scenario is revealed, the sillier and more frenetic the proceedings become, devolving into a series of ludicrous chases and extremely gory fight sequences…”. Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a score of 76%, and an audience score of 52%.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

THE FILM — part of the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU — follows Shang Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind after he is drawn into the mysterious Ten Rings Organization. Directed by Des-tin Daniel Cretton, the film stars Simu Liu, Tony Leung, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng. IndieWire’s Kate Erbland writes, “It sets up plenty of predictable parts to come, but the pleasures of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings when it’s allowed to be its own thing are deep. As the MCU only continues to expand, Mr. Cretton’s film should be pointed to as a sterling example of what’s possible when a hero is allowed to be his own man, on his own terms.” Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a score of 92%, while its audience score is 98%.
